The Parque Natural Sierra de las Nieves is in the centre of the region of Ronda in south west Spain. It is mountainous with deep ravines and spectacular cliffs including La Caina which has a sheer drop of over 100 metres. The limestone rock has also created a number of potholes with the deepest at 1,100 metres.
The highest peak is Torrecilla which stands at 1,919 metres in the Sierra Blanca de Tolox.
In the mountain peaks where precipitation and fog are common, large numbers of gall oaks and Spanish firs (which are the most unusual species in the world) are to be found. At lower altitudes holm cork oaks thrive. You can also see chestnut, yew, maple and ash trees growing here.
The Sierra de las Nieves is full of protected animal species including the wild cat, golden eagle and otter, as well as large communities of mountain goat and deer.
