The Ronda bullring is regarded as one of the oldest in Spain, with Ronda considered to be the seat of bullfighting and equestrian sports. King Philip II created the Real Maestranza de caballeria in Ronda in 1572. The bullring is a work of architectural beauty, built of limestone with double arches and 136 Tuscan-like columns.
In the 18th century the Romero family from Ronda provided over three generations of the most outstanding bullfighters. The most important of them was Pedro Romero (1754-1839) who was a key figure in the history of bullfighting and retired after slaying more than 5,600 bulls over a period of 30 years without ever being hurt.
